There is no question that the joy vastly outweighs the pain. She was a blessing in my life. Love came to me on little cat feet. Under her tutelage, I learned to love and trust other humans. It took someone less capable of dissembling - a cat - to pull me out of my shell in those days. She helped me to grow up.
I am infinitely soluble in cats, but there is only one Shinutsu. She was an amazing being. It was inevitable that her soul would outgrow her body. She will always live in my heart.
Her last illness was, like so many things, an experience she and I went through together. Every few days, we seemed to get worse news - arthritis, kidney disease, then the root of the matter, the tumor that was largely inoperable (10-15% chance of surgery giving her a few more months; 85-90% of cutting short her last few weeks).
She had a week where she almost gave up - when she had a cold that made the whole experience of loss of mobility, MRI, etc, that much worse. Then, the bond between us pulled me back from training in VA to her, and pulled her out of her mood. I hope I was worthy of the love and trust she had for me for the fifteen years we were together.
heptadecagram tells about her last day. The only comments I'd add: she had a fine last meal and we cuddled up together and she purred for a good long time before I fell asleep. And when I woke up, she was barely there, and it was clear that it was time. Another blessing: she was still able to focus on me, and I saw no fear in her one eye that's always had the emotive power of two.
All of you who sent hugs and support through heptadecagram's posts or email, or who saw me this weekend, thank you. Hugs received and appreciated, though I've had scant chance to respond. I had my qualms about socializing when the honest answer to how I was doing was so sad, but it really helped to get out.
This was her song; Faith and the Muse must have known her or her twin.
Soft in essence purity, came to me in blissful dreams, And bade me follow sleepily to sights we few have never seen, I dropped down to join her view, I fit quite well her feline saunter, Rings and echos past we two, a sing-song call did beckon her,
And with her heart she looked at me, saw me as a fellow being, It seems she was about to speak, of other worlds and times.
Further on we made our way, towards a bright and shining chamber, Where others greeted gracefully and bowed to her with royal charm, And then the group began to dance, to a distant melody, And when I did awake at last, she lay sleeping next to me,
And with her heart she looked at me, Saw me as a fellow being, It seems she about to speak of other worlds and times.
And in her eyes I gaze forever, it's the deepest understanding, Of a long forgotten queen, in these dreams of mine.
And I have often pondered who she may really be, The soul of someone once close to me, in these dreams of mine, In these dreams of mine, in these dreams of mine.

| Why isn't our tree opening up (from it's compressed tree-lot state)? Do I have to gunzip it or something? It's been in the house overnight (in water, of course).

Poll #1092631 professional society memberships
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: AllIf you were a software engineer interested in math and physics (I know, this is quite general) and your employer would pay for one professional society membership, what would you choose?
Edit: If you have specific special interest groups or societies in mind, listing them would be helpful ... | comments: 18 comments or Leave a comment |

| I had a few moments of internet time left, so I thought I'd post..
We caught up on sleep although heptadecagram still wakes up later than usual - a unique experience for him. We've seen lots of Malta which still leaves much unseen - the country is small dimensionally in space but not in time. I'm sure hepta will write about the good eats we've found here after we get back sometime on Sunday.
Sooo many fortresses ... impossible to see them all and additionally, many of them are off limits. Space is dear on Malta - St. Elmo's, for example, currently houses a police academy. Still, pictures of the outside were good. Gorgeous armory in Valetta but unfortunately, most of the mementos related to the Knights of St. John period of Maltese history are tacky.
Oodles of prehistoric temples, at least one older than Stonehenge.
Oddly enough, the spirals that show up in said temples overlapped with the Maltese cross (from the 16th century on) almost make up my personal symbol of a dotted copper spiral overlayed with a silver eight pointed star.
We may have overdone the ancient temples at the expense of coverage later time periods. Still, awesome.
And of course, lots of chilling out from the wedding was done, most of which does not make appropriate subject matter for a post such as this.
We hit Gozo only for one day and missed the Blue Lagoon. But Mdina is my favorite city. Both hepta and I are enchanted by Malta. Hmmm, running out of time, but got oodles of pictures and memories!!! | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

The internet access is slower than I am. Grrr. There are lots of old buildings. 7,000 years of history, sayeth the posters at the airport. Hey uilos, let us know when you've got the key and hotel contact info? Can get us on cell or comment to this or email. | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |

| This entry in bittercat's journal links to a petition to end the trade in tiger products in Asia.
I've signed it, now if I think about it anymore while at work I'll get in a most-unproductive mood. | comments: Leave a comment |

And Happy Birthdays to silmaril and grimclown, I'm sorry to have missed/be missing your parties - I'm feeling somewhat healthier today but not quite outdoors-worthy.
Happy Birthdays (slightly early) to libunnyfoofoo, darwiniacat and dglenn, 'cause if I don't post now I won't remember :)
And a Happy Early Birthday to lou_read, although I expect I'll remember to call you closer to the date! | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| I'm now getting LJ comment notification again, also red_lynx at livejournal dot com now works. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's going to take me a while to catch up on responses as I strained my hand at fighter practice last night. I think it was lifting the armor bag rather than fighting, for the record .... | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| heptadecagram and I were on the 3-party plan.
We started off with ednoria's yoga party. I had worked out the day before. Yoga is just stretching, right? Wrong! I have a few sore muscles I didn't know were there in the first place. It was very instructive, and I'd like to do it again :)
Next, we went to werewulf's Shakespeare-themed party. We wandered around in costume for a while. I got to see people I don't intersect with often enough (SFI always overlaps with werewulf's movie night).
Then heptadecagram and I performed the proposal scene from Henry V.
Then heptadecagram proposed to me in earnest. And I said yes. I'm rather happy right now!1
The entire thing is on videotape if anyone not present at the party is feeling masochistic.
Then, we went to Ingrid's party (she is LJ-less). We had some incredibly good food, got congratulated some more, played a board game and then played pool for a while. I like pool. It reminds me of archery, which is also a quiet aiming sort of game that I rarely get around to playing.
The day involved a lot of wardrobe changes, but it was worth it!
1. Yes, I knew he was going to propose. Why did we decide to do a public proposal? The idea seemed to tickle heptadecagram, and, well, I enjoy tickling him :) With werewulf's Shakespeare party coming up, heptadecagram asked me if I knew of any Shakespeare plays with proposals (besides R&J). I made the mistake of mentioning that I love Henry V because it has really great battle scenes, and oh yeah, there's a proposal scene in there too. So, I ended up with the part with the most speaking lines since I don't know French. And the rest is history! | comments: 34 comments or Leave a comment |
